In the first transfer market move since the arrival of new General Manager Jesse Fioranelli, the San Jose Earthquakes have signed Panamanian defender Harold Cummings on a multi-year contract.
Cummings has won forty-six caps for the Panamanian national team since making his international debut as a teenager in 2010 and will link up with national team teammate Anibal Godoy in San Jose, pending receipt of his P-1 Visa and ITC. The twenty-four-year-old joins from LD Alajuelense of the Costa Rican Primera División, where he made twenty-three appearances and scored one goal after joining the side on loan last January.
“Harold is a talented young player and we’re excited to add him to our roster,” said technical director Chris Leitch. “To have nearly 50 international appearances before his 25th birthday ensures we’re getting a player with a rare combination of youthfulness and experience.”
The center-back has played in Colombia, Peru, and Uruguay in the last five years, and won the Copa Sudamericana title in a short stint with Independiente Sante Fe in 2015. He had recently hinted at a move Stateside and the Quakes were eager to snap up the promising young center-back in order to rejuvenate their aging defensive line.
“I have seen a lot of Harold during his time with Panama,” said head coach Dominic Kinnear. “He’s a very aggressive, intimidating young center back, who will add a good amount of strength to our back line.”
Welcome to San Jose, Harold! 💪
