San Jose Earthquakes General Manager Jessie Fioranelli sacked head coach Mikael Stahre and assistant coach Alex de Crook on Monday morning. Assistant coach Steve Ralston will take charge as interim manager for the remaining six matches of the MLS regular season.
With only four wins from twenty-eight league matches this season, the Earthquakes are last-placed in MLS and showed no signs of improvement under Stahre, who joined the club during the offseason. Despite initial resistance, Fioranelli finally caved to calls for Stahre’s firing after the club’s 5-1 loss to Sporting Kansas City on Saturday night, their worst-ever loss at Avaya Stadium.
Said Fioranelli: “We felt we needed a change and decided that the six remaining games represent an opportunity for all of us to begin heading in a new direction and to evaluate our options actively with a single goal in mind: to strengthen our First Team for the upcoming season and beyond.”
Goalkeeper coach Jyri Nieminen will remain on the coaching staff and Director of Methodology Alex Covelo will serve as an assistant coach on Ralston’s team.
