The San Jose Earthquakes broke multiple club records in a comprehensive 3-1 victory over the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday, but there’s one in particular that stands out.
Having tallied an amazing thirty-two shots for a second match running, Matias Almeyda’s men surpassed the Major League Soccer record for shots recorded by a single team in back-to-back matches. The stat is only indicative of the adventurous attacking spirit with which San Jose are playing and their relentless execution in these last two road games.
The Quakes were firing on all cylinders once again, with Vako, Chris Wondolowski, and Magnus Eriksson each finding the scoresheet. Cristian Espinoza remained brilliant down the right, tallying two assists. It seems such exceptional performances have become the norm for San Jose this summer.
Matias Almeyda’s only significant concern should be his team’s susceptibility to early goals. On this occasion, San Jose started again on the back foot, conceding early for the third time in four matches. Doneil Henry stuck a foot in to finish a set piece in the fifth minute, giving Vancouver their second lead in their last seven matches.
It wouldn’t last long, though. The Quakes overran the home side with aggressive pressing and quick attacking play, and it was only a matter of time before Vako pulled the Quakes level from Espinoza’s low cross.
San Jose bombarded Maxime Crepeau’s goal with shots, as Espinoza fired on target from distance and Vako nearly scored from a low cross. Chris Wondolowski completed the comeback in the thirty-fourth minute, cleaning up after Vako’s shot hit the post.
Yordy Reyna headed wide shortly thereafter but the momentum was all San Jose’s and Magnus Eriksson put the match to bed with a low finish from Espinoza’s cut-back in the second half.
