The San Jose Earthquakes are poised to appoint Argentinian manager Matias Almeyda as head coach, according to reports. After the Quakes fired head coach Mikael Stahre last month, Almeyda now appears set to replace interim head coach Steve Ralston.
Almeyda, aged forty-four, was a successful player in Italy and Argentina, earning thirty-five caps for the Argentina national team. He began his managerial career with River Plate in 2011 and most recently coached Mexican behemoth Chivas Guadalajara for three years. Although Almeyda led the club to the CONCACAF Champions League title last April, he departed in June after disagreements with club directors.
The signing will be viewed as a coup for the Quakes organization, as Almeyda had previously been linked with the vacant head seat for the Mexican national team. The club hinted at an upcoming announcement with a photo on Instagram.
